The album description mentions an “emotional apex.” That’s really the difference between Stare and the band’s previous albums. Ulcerate was always supremely technically proficient. I just didn’t care all that much. Their growth has come from making music you will feel.

La traversée du désert n'aura pas duré quarante jours mais quatre longues années... Avec Панихида, Батюшка renaît enfin de ses cendres et, bien que désormais seul (ou plus exactement entouré de deux chanteurs), Христофор accomplit un miracle. Il s'inscrit dans la continuité de Литоургиiа avec un black metal orthodoxe qui nous convie ici à une cérémonie dédiée aux morts. Sa vision est englobante : les mélodies, la gravité et le silence font toucher le paradis ; l'agressivité est luciférienne.

Lycanthia et Atten Ash partagent de nombreux points communs, à commencer par des sorties sous le même label, un intérêt pour le death/doom metal mélodique mais surtout l'amour pour les "classiques" qui ont contribué à la popularité du genre. Il est intéressant de voir que Lycanthia cherche à combattre à armes égales, réduisant la présence du violon pour être plus écrasant. Dommage qu'Atten Ash n'en fasse pas autant : "City in the Sea" est excellent mais elle date de The Hourglass. Un bon split !
